JCCV Film Night on Monday, March 27th

JCCV FILM NIGHT

Monday, March 27th at 7:00 pm

Announcing the triumphal return of Victoria’s all time favourite movie:

 THE GODS MUST BE CRAZY

From South Africa’s filmmaker Jamie Uys. From a meager budget of 5 million dollars this original and thought-provoking comedy went on to delight audiences world wide.

Xi, a Kalahari bushman, takes it upon himself to return an unwanted coke bottle to the Gods. On his journey he encounters a lovelorn micro-biologist, a Johannesburg school teacher newly installed in a small jungle village, and a band of terrorists bent on overthrowing the government of the day. All are enmeshed in a plot so insane, it could only happen in the “civilized” world!

The gods must be crazy but maybe we are even crazier!

Please join us for a fun evening of cinema…schmoozing…discussing and generally having a good time! State of the Art projection on the new large screen & great sound system!

Popcorn and cold drinks included in the $10 price of admission.

Always a classic cartoon or two prior to the feature! Doors open at 6:30 PM.

Food For Thought Luncheon on Monday, March 20th

Edith Piaf, the Parisian Sparrow

edith-piaf-image

Edith Piaf is a cultural icon, in France and beyond. She is remembered for her songs, but also for her look (that launched a fashion) and for the symbolic dimension of her love affairs. What does she represent? What are the salient elements of her life that became a legend? The talk will retrace the life and songs of Edith Piaf, as well as emphasize the reasons of her enduring popularity, attested by an ever-flowered tombstone.

Our speaker, Dr. Hélène Cazes, a specialist of humanism, is a professor at the Department of French and the director of the Program of Medieval Studies. She has been awarded the Award of Excellence in Research (Uvic, Humanities, 2013) as well as the University of Victoria Leadership Award for her work on humanism and its dissemination. She is currently working on cultural icons.

When:  Monday, March 20th from 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm.

Where:  Jewish Community Centre of Victoria, 3636 Shelbourne St.

JCCV FILM NIGHT

Monday, February 27th at 7:00 pm

“TWIN SISTERS (De Tweeling)”

 jccv-film-night-twin-sisters-image

The JCCV Film Night crew is proud to announce the Victoria premiere of the Academy Award nominated movie “Twin Sisters”. Original Release: 2002 The Netherlands. Director: Ben Sombogaard. From the Novel by Tessa de Loo. This thoughtful film accentuates “the Grey” of wartime tales.

Anna and Lotte are twin sisters tragically separated when their father dies unexpectedly. Anna is taken in by a poor rural German family and looks to a better future through the promise of National Socialism. Lotte is adopted by a well-off Dutch family and is engaged to a Jewish musician. Their lives follow different and opposite paths. Attempts at contact are thwarted by their families.

Will there be a reunion/reconciliation? Is there too much water under the bridge?

One of the best of the Dutch Cinema!
