Topic: Memory Matters: Holocaust and Memory Studies at UVic
Speakers: Helga Thorson, Chair of the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies, and Students from UVic
Participants will discuss why the memory of the Holocaust matters in today¹s world. You will hear first-hand from students who have registered for the 2018 I-witness Field school, led by Dr. Helga Thorson, a four-week course on Holocaust memorialization in Europe. In addition, you will have the opportunity to meet the first cohort of students enrolled in the graduate-level Holocaust Studies stream in the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies at UVic who will tell you more about a memorialization project they are working on in conjunction with the “Servitengasse 1938” working group in Vienna, Austria. The students will not only discuss why memory matters, but they will explain how, through their interactions with this project, they are taking “matters of memory” into their own hands.
