The beautiful harpist Sarah is married to Abraham, the charismatic conductor of the Jerusalem Philharmonic Orchestra. With no children, their melancholy life revolves around their music. Enter Hagar, a young horn player who joins the orchestra and forms a close personal relationship with Sarah. Their bond gives way to something more fraught, when Hagar offers to carry the couple’s baby. A modern retelling of the story of Abraham, Sarah and Hagar from Genesis, Harmonia offers surprising new ways to interpret the ancient story.
Director Ori Sivan, 2016, 98 mins.
Nominated for five Israeli Academy Awards. Winner of the Best Cinematography Award and the Lia Van Leer Jewish Heritage awards, both at the Jerusalem Film Festival.
Following the screening of Harmonia, join us at the Dance Victoria Studios, 2750 Quadra St., for the not to be missed opening night celebration. There will be light contemporary Israeli food catered by Yalla, a colour changing cocktail expertly mixed by Victoria Distillers, live jazz, sweet treats and more.

SOLDIER OF ORANGE (SOLDAAT VAN ORANJE)
Director: Paul Verhoeven.
Stars: Rutger Hauer, Jeroen Krabbe, Edward Fox.
Holland 1940. The German Army invades the Netherlands, and a nation suddenly finds itself under Nazi occupation. What follows is one of the most controversial periods in European wartime history as the Dutch are torn between collaboration and resistance.
For 6 young college students at Leiden University the choices they make will irreparably change the fate of their homeland as their lives become an epic adventure of courage, betrayal and survival.
Based on the best selling memoir by Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema, Soldier of Orange became the international breakthrough film for director Paul Verhoeven. It is still considered by critics worldwide to be one of the most powerful war films ever made.
Please join us for this powerful war film on Monday, November 6th at 7:00 pm.
Doors open at 6:30 pm.
Please join us for a fun evening of cinema…schmoozing…discussing and generally having a good time! State of the Art projection, large screen & great sound!
Snacks and cold drinks included in the $10 price of admission.
Always a classic cartoon and newsreel prior to the feature!

Varied routes taking one to one and a half hour at a lively pace cover a range of terrain in parks and neighbourhoods, on trails and pedestrian pathways, all with the aims of good health, enjoyment of our environment, and socializing. After each walk, there’s an optional café stop. No need to commit to the whole series; come when you can and walk at your own risk.
Details of where to meet and route descriptions are e-mailed out by the Wednesday preceding each Friday walk. To be on this season’s list, please contact volunteer leader Juliet Simon at jhsimon@shaw.ca.
