Tara Ison Book Presentation of At the Hour Between Dog and Wolf

At the Hour Between Dog and Wolf is the story of a Jewish child in WWII Vichy France forced to live “in hiding” as a Catholic orphan. The novel explores questions of identity and survival, and the influence of anti-Semitic, Fascist, and extremist ideologies.

Tara Ison (https://taraison.com/) is the award-winning author of the novels A Child out of Alcatraz, The List, and Rockaway; the short story collection Ball, and the essay collection Reeling Through Life: How I Learned to Live, Love, and Die at the Movies.

Her short fiction, essays, poetry and book reviews have appeared in Tin House, O, The Oprah Magazine, Salon, Electric Literature, The Kenyon Review, The Rumpus, Nerve.com, Black Clock, TriQuarterly, PMS: poemmemoirstory, Publisher’s Weekly, The Week magazine, The Mississippi Review, LA Weekly, the Los Angeles Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Chicago Tribune, the San Jose Mercury News, and numerous anthologies. She is also the co-writer of the cult movie Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead. 

She is the recipient of 2020 and 2008 National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowships and a 2008 COLA Individual Artist Grant, as well as multiple Yaddo fellowships, a fellowship at Hawthornden Castle in Scotland, a Rotary Foundation Scholarship for International Study, a Brandeis National Women’s Committee Award, a Thurber House Fiction Writer-in-Residence Fellowship, the Simon Blattner Fellowship from Northwestern University, and a California Arts Council Artists’ Fellowship Award. She received her MFA in Fiction & Literature from Bennington College. She has taught creative writing at Washington University in St. Louis, Northwestern University, Ohio State University, Goddard College, Antioch University Los Angeles, and UC Riverside Palm Desert’s MFA in Creative Writing program. She is currently Professor of Fiction at Arizona State University.

Building Community through Live Music

Why is live music important? What are the various roles that people play and how does this translate into stronger communities and vibrant cities? Explore the connections between mental health, physical health and the various levels at which one can participate in the arts as either spectator, presenter or artist.

Canadian Trumpeter Merrie Klazek is active as a performer, teacher and recording artist in orchestral, chamber, solo, traditional and popular music. She holds a Bachelor of Music with distinction from her native Calgary, and a Master of Music, Pi Kappa Lamba from Northwestern University where she studied with the late Vincent Cichowicz.

Her musical travels have taken her around the globe with performance highlights including the Spoleto Festival Italy, Musik Contemporaire Strasbourg France, Tokyo’s Bunka Kaikan hall, Stratford Festival, Hungary’s Niyrbator Festival, the International Trumpet Guild Conference, and the International Women’s Brass Conference.

She has appeared as a soloist with a variety of Canadian orchestras and ensembles. She has been the principal trumpet with the Thunder Bay Symphony, since 1999 and has held the same position with the Victoria Symphony (2005/06) and Orchestra London Canada (1996-99.) She has performed in the trumpet sections of Canada’s top orchestras and spent 14 years on faculty at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay. In 2016, she joined the full-time faculty at the University of Victoria’s School of Music. Her teaching philosophy has its foundations in the Arnold Jacobs’ school of Wind and Song. As a chamber musician, she is a founding member of Brass Northwest in Thunder Bay, and currently also plays with Pinnacle Brass Quintet on the west coast.

Her solo recording entitled “Songs to the Moon” has been featured on TVO Studio 2 and on CBC Radio. She appears on numerous other recordings including four JUNO nominated albums, and is currently working on her second solo recording, which will highlight the trumpet in settings of various world styles in collaboration with renowned folk musicians.

The talk will focus on how cities impact the environment and how the process of urbanization has local, regional and global impact. Reasons why it is important to encourage sustainable initiatives in cities by highlighting some of the problems with rapid urbanization and issues such as green space, habitat fragmentation, biodiversity and climate change, will be discussed.
Organizations around Victoria that are implementing solutions will be highlighted.
